Who is the greatest children’s magician in the world? Well, this is a difficult question to answer because there could be several people claiming to be the greatest magician for children.
As long as we, as human beings, strive for excellence, the search for the greatest children’s magician will go on. One thing is very clear, communities across the world have their own unique and varied ways of selecting performers and proclaiming the winner as the greatest children’s magician in the world. Contests are held at the local community, national or international levels and are judged by peers in the profession.
Several organizations, such as the United States-based International Brotherhood of Magicians, Society of Young Magicians and many similar ones across the world hold contests to select the greatest children’s magician.
The objective of conducting contests for the greatest is almost the same for all organizations. The objective is to develop an interest in children to take up magic as a hobby that would help develop skill and self-confidence, not to mention discipline that comes from learning, practicing and performing magic. Whatever the objectives, the competitions for selecting the greatest children’s magician are themselves entertainment shows. These shows are marketed as major entertainment events and have an ardent fan following. Most of the judges watch the participants for not only technical skills, but for their artistic impact, entertainment content, originality and their showmanship. Obviously, it is a combination of qualities that qualifies a person to win the title, whatever name you might choose to call it.
If you look at the profiles of popular magicians, past and present, you can see that the qualities of greatness was present even as a child. Many of them were the greatest children’s magician in their neighbourhood, town and city in their younger days before moving on either practicing magic as a hobby or pursuing it as a profession.
To be bestowed the title of the greatest children’s magician at a very young age is really an honour. This is because it is a special recognition given by society and peers in the magic profession. Earning the title, puts additional responsibility on the showman and his craft.
Besides learning to live up to the pressures of being the greatest children’s magician, the showman should ensure that he uses his skills and craft for common good. A majority of magicians across the world are the flag bearers of this philosophy.
